The Hidden Fortress of Saint Nicholas

The hidden fortress of Saint Nicholas is situated at the entrance to the canal of Saint Anthony which guides sailers to the main port of Sibenik. Due to the fact that the building still looks like it was left centuries ago it is kind of an adventure visiting the fortress. Hardly anyone knows that it is existing and even less people come there to enjoy its beauty. What makes it so spezial and why it´s worth visiting the fortress of Saint Nichloas?

No touristic souvenir-shops, no artificially created viewing platform or expensive Cafés: exactly that makes the fortress of Saint Nicholas to something special! But I´m skipping an important point:

How to get there?

The fortress is situated in the south of Sibenik. Following the sign to “Solaris” will lead you to the right way. For the further way I highly recommend to use google maps to not get lost… I am parking my car on the coast, close to a little beach: up to here you have to walk. The fortress of Saint Nicholas in already in view.

The fortress were built in the 16th century. Its purpose was the defense of the turkish attackers who tried to conquer the city. It were construced by the venetian (military) architect Michiele Sammichelle. The fortress belongs to the most powerful fortifications along the croatian coast. To get there you just have to follow the way on the left side. A wooden brindge leads to an island which is situated in between the mainland and the fortress.

The crystal clear water is just a few centimeters deep. If you look closely you can see a lot of black mussels along the way: they are domestic in salty water. Following the way on the island you will see ruins of old military builiding along the path.

The transfer to the fortress is very improvised. Just a few towered up stones help you reaching the aim without getting wet.

For those who managed to come so far: up the here you have to choose. The climb up to the fortress involves a risk. Just a (probably made by residents) wooden construct leads up to a window. Only those who are confident about their skills should go further…

Once you reached the top the view is amazing! You start to imagine how it was centuries ago when the soldiers spotted the distant ships. Looking around I can see plant growing through the walls, stones loosing their footing and much more. But I can´t see a single human being. It is almost like I conquered the castle!

I am walking through the open door to get to the inside of the fortress. The rooms are big and a bit scary. You get the feeling that the walls could collapse every second or the stairs would go belly up. But it is interesting to see how the rooms looked like earlier and walking along the ways like the soldiers did years ago.

I assume that the fortress won´t be a secret for a long time. For those who want to experience an adventure I recommend to visit it soon. Even though you decide to stay outside the castle it is definately worth going there and see a part of croatia´s history. I am looking forward reading about your experiences there! How did you like the fortress of Saint Nicholas?

  1. …. das ist ja wirklich der Hammer!!! ^^
