When you are searching for destinations in croatia, it won´t take long untill you come across Dubrovnik. In fact it isn´t hard to understand why this city is enjoying such a great popularity. Once you visited Dubrovnik you will fall in love with the city…
I am pretty sure that everybody already saw some pictures or at least postcards from Dubrovnik before entering the city in person. The nice thing is: the city REALLY looks like on that pictures! Wonderful fortifications, a beautiful city wall, lovely offshore islands, amazing beaches and a scenic backdrop: whatever you are searching for, in Dubrovnik you will find it! Eventhough the city is with its about 40,000 habitants quite small (in the old city center are living even less than 1000), Dubrovnik is attracting tourists like a flame the moths. During summer season you will see about 25,000 people going along the main street “Stradun” (residents call the street “Placa”) daily. It therefore seems to be important to me to say: for those who are not determined on their travel date should visit the city in the lower seasons. The most beautiful time is in (my opinion) May / June. Well, before I am going to talk about how amazing, awesome and beautiful Dubrovnik is, I simply going to show you its beauty in pictures…
the old city
In 1979 the whole old city of Dubrovnik were put on the list of UNESCO world heritage. Regularly you enter the old city through the “Pile-Gate”. Afterwards you are going down some steps and passing through an other smaller gate which leads you to the main street “Stradun” (“Placa”). Since every little lane is leading back to that main street, it is actually impossible to get lost!
In the alleys which are branching to the left and right side you are going to find numerous of cafés, restaurants, bars, fast-food stores, souvenir shops and much more. Those who booked an accommodation in the old city will have great fun carrying their bags up the stairs.. myriad of steps are going uphill and let the tourists even more sweat (like it is not enough walking around when it´s 35 C degrees). Well, the good thing is: afterwards you deserve an ice cream!
Around the big places (of course big in relation to the city size) you can always watch some entertaining shows, events or other artistic presentation. And eventhough nothing is going on you can stil enjoy the beautiful monuments.
the city wall
Going round the city wall is an absolute duty! For 150 kuna (about 20 Euro) you can walk around for two days and bring your camera to a red-hot glow. Looking outside the city you will have an amazing view to the cliffs and to the endless horizon, looking inside down to the old city you will be overwhelmed by red roofs.
hidden Bays und Bars
Turning right when you are on the port of the old city (go round ouside the walls) you will discover a hidden and beautiful bay called Buza Bar. Here you can jump from the rocks and enjoy the sun. Additionally a bar will offer you cold drinks and snacks. The Buza Bay is situated exactly in front of the city walls which makes it to an unique place: an absolutely MUST SEE in Dubrovnik!
Impressive, isn´t it? An other hidden bar which is named after the same called bay is the Buza Bar. Since you can´t reach it from the outside you have to walk to the very end of the wall from the inside and enter the bar through a very small gate. Behind that gate a paradisiacal area is waiting for you! Btw: If you are coming here in summer you can jump from the high cliffs or (if you are afraid) just watch others jumping from here while enjoying a cold drink…
the Banje Beach
It is probably Dubrovnik´s most famous beach: the Banje beach. It is situated just a bit outside of the old city and is especially recommended for families (since the cliffs at Buza bay aren´t really safe). Here you can lie on comfortable pubble stones and enjoy the stunning view to the island. Almost half of the beach is occupied by the Banje Beach Bar. So if you prefer to lie of beach mats, enjoying a cocktail in the shadow of sun umbrellas this is the place to be.
the stunning view from srd
If the city wall isn´t enough for you or you simply can´t get enough you should go up hill called Srd by cableway. For 130 kuna (about 18 Euro) you can enjoy your way up and down the 400 meters high hill. From here you have a stunning panoramic view over the old city and its offshore islands. If it´s possible you should plan some hours to have enough time.. trust me, you want to enjoy this!
Besides that fabulous view you can go to the war musuem which is situated right next to the panoramic spot. Inside the old ruin of Fort Imperial from the early 19th century you can explore croatia´s history from 1991 till 1995.
Dubrovnik can really be seen as the “pearl of the adriatic”. If you haven´t been here yet you should definately put it on your bucket-list. Since you are walking the whole day up and down the stairs you are (involuntary) constantly doing sports. So at the end of the day you will probably feel like the cats (and me) here…
I hope my article will help you a bit to have a good start into the city of Dubrovnik. I am looking forward reading about your experiences!
