The Canal of Saint Anthony in Sibenik – A Promenade to Fall in Love with

Most of the cities in croatia have a view on the distant horizont, whereas Sibenik offers a beautiful canal which guides sailers to the main port of the city. Along the canal of Saint Anthony strollers can enjoy the 3 kilometer long promenade and its charming surrounding. Why you shouldn´t miss this way?

How to get there?

I´m sitting in a Café in Sibenik looking at the canal of Saint Anthony across from me. While one sailing ship after another is passing through the passage I start to focus on a big white rock face on the left side of the canal. I wonder how it is to stand there up the hill watching down in my direction: I need to see it! I´m driving with my car a bit outside to the south of the city and turn right following the sign that guides me to “Solaris”. For the further way I highly recommend to use google maps to not get lost… I am parking my car on the coast, close to a little beach: up to here you have to walk. Going left you will reach the castle of Saint Nikola (which you can already see), going right you will start your way along the promenade.

I am impressed how beautiful they refurbished the way along the canal. The route winds through the trees and rocks. Picnip places and little bays along the way are inviting hikers to have a rest. On the right side of the path you can see empty ancient military biulding which are falling apart: at night this probably looks a bit creepy, or lets say less inviting.

Cyclists and jogger start passing by. Furthermore some residents are sitting along the way trying to catch fishes (with big success how I can see). When you look a bit closer you will see a lot of black spots on the bays. These are mussels, or to be more exact the seashells. They are domestic in salty water.

Welcome to sibenik

The turquoise-blue sea next to me shows every stone underwater. Nearly halfway to my target I am glancing a big sign (usually just visible for sailers) saying “Welcome to Sibenik. Some big white rocks tower up in front of it. I decide to sit down here taking a short rest and enjoying the view.

Shortly after I can already see the last meters of my way. I assumed that I would need to walk up a hill.. now I know it.

The Cave

Before going up the hill it is first going the oposite way: down. A sign is guiding me down some stairs to a cave. A few steps after I can already see it.

The lower cave guides me to another smaller canal inside the rocks. When I walked through I almost had a heart attack because of birds crossing my way inside the cave: probably you should reckon with that…

Going up a little hill on the right side you will reach another cave. That one is a bit more special since it is a church, to be more exact: it is the church of Saint Anthony. Black walls and a disintegrate altar are showing a really bleak picture of the church.

After that side trip I going back to my real aim. The last meters are going steeply up the hill.

the view

On the left side you can overview the entire canal of Saint Anthony. On the right side you have a beautiful view to the city of Sibenik. It almost feels like being the king of the world!

My walk along the canal of Saint Anthony stops here. It is one of the most beautiful path to walk in croatia. If you are here during summer, you shouldn´t miss to bring you bathing clothes! I´m looking forward hearing your experiences and impressions!
