Next to to city Nin you can find a beautiful sandy beach which has a royal name: The Queen´s Beach. It is about 3 kilometers long and even contains a remedial mud pit. I am wondering: Is the royal name justified? Am I going to feel royal as soon as I arrive there?
Even so it is end of march (too cold to go for a swim), I set out for exploring Nin´s sandy Queen´s beach. A wooden bridge leads me to deserted sandy area with a beautiful view of the mountains of Velebit. Since sandy beaches are really rare in croatia it is very unusual to see this outlook. It remindes me a bit of a advertising poster from the north sea in Germany…
On the left side you can find a little café offering a rest while having a coffee (currently closed). Next to it is a playground for volleyball. In summer the Queen´s Beach is a famous place for windsurfers who made this beach their home. Behind the café you can find more places to berths on the beach. For those who are looking for a shaded places, they won´t make a find.
My next stop is the notorious mud pit, which is situated just a few meters inside. Travellers are coming here full of hope to moisturize with the remediate mud called Peloid. I am asking some residents about their experiences to find out more. The mud functions as a remedy for skin deseases, rheumatism, athrose and much more complaints. But the smell you have to carry around for the next 3 days (even though you are showering all the time) is said to be unbearable. I am foregoing this experience for the moment but take anyway a closer look to the mud pit. The dried up mud shows me the way. My shoes collected half the beach in the meanwhile and start to sink more and more into the mud the closer I get to the pit.
The surface is mushy and brown. Not until you are grab into you can see the black remediate mud.
Going back up the wooden bridge you can find some shaded places under pine trees. From here you have a beautiful view of the city Nin.
For those you want to experience a different landscape from croatia, they should come here! Since sandy beaches are really rare in croatia you will find many people coming here in summer time. The Queen´s Beach became a famous place for vacation or day trips. Since you feel in fact royal when you are coming here in the lower season, in summer in between the crowded area you probably won´t feel royal anymore. Anyway a nice destination to spend time!
